January 28 . . . Sleep vs No Sleep

So last night went so well! We put baby to bed in his room around 7:30. He was dead to the world until 11:30 or so, when he wined for 3 minutes and then put himself back to sleep (lucky for daddy, since we agreed that he was on duty before midnight, I would take him after midnight). And not until about 3:30 did he legitimately wake up. We nursed in the guest bed in his room for about 20 minutes. He was sounds asleep, but woke up when I put him back in his crib. About 5 minutes of whining and then out. Brilliant. Daddy woke up when he started crying, moaned about getting up, and then realized it was 6:15. This kid slept for nearly 11 hours. I'd call that a success.

On the flip side, he's been screaming his little head off, refusing to take a nap all day, so ...

January 11 . . . 9 Months

I just realized I never did my 9 month post! The rush of doctor visits, Gramma Jan and Grampy visiting, and a little thing called the Stomach Flu, I never got around to it!

But better late than never . . .

Nine Months

What he's doing ...

He can pull himself up to standing on just about anything. His favorite is to stand on things that move, like the ottoman, the rocking chair, and mommy.

He'll walk while holding on to your hands, and will walk holding onto the couch.

He lets go while standing, but doesn't notice. He'll be standing next to the couch holding something, decide he needs to switch hands, and lets go of the couch to move the toy.

He claps. This is one of my favorite things, mostly because we didn't teach him that. He must have learned it at school, which makes me feel 100% better about sending him to daycare, since obviously they are "cheerful" people.

We're still nursing! I pump twice a day at work, and now that my boss has left, I can use her office (which is SO much more convenient than the by-appointment-only pumping room). It was so nice while we were all sick, because 1) it was very comforting to him and 2) I didn't have to get up to make bottles. I didn't even have to SIT up! My goal is to stop pumping at 1 year, and hopefully I'll have enough in the freezer to send milk to school for a month or so, transitioning him to more solids and less milk. Then we can still nurse in the morning and at night, but I don't have to worry about sending anything with him during the day.
He has also changed his "attitude" about nursing, which I think is so funny. He'll actively "ask" for it by sticking his face in my chest, and sometimes when he's asleep and I pop him off, he starts roothing around with a big open mouth looking for his booby.

Plus he did this:

He plays with toys. This has been super fun.

And finally, sleep . . .we have two issues:

I would like my spot back.

And this is how I feel most days.
6052FC9B-9DDE-4D42-A4B6-E35A35C9AEDA

We're starting to think about moving him out of our bed. Right now, his crib is up against our bed. He starts off the night in his crib and often "puts himself to sleep" (whines for 5 minutes and falls asleep). About half the time he wakes up just after we go to bed, around 10. He sees me there and won't go back to sleep without nursing, though I'm not convinced he's actually hungry. At this point I usually fall asleep with him next to me, where he stays until morning. A few times Chris has taken him out to his Pack N Play when he's been super whiny and won't go back to sleep, where he cries for a minute and then is out for the rest of the night. That makes us think that maybe if he were in his room, he wouldn't see me and then would be able to calm himself back to sleep.
So this weekend we're going to put his crib in his room. Our old bed is still in there, so I can lie down with him if I need to. We'll start him out there, and if he wakes up, one of us will go in. He can come back in our bed in the morning, if that means we all get a bit more sleep. So . . . good luck to us!

Birthday Planning

I know, I know, he's only 9 months old. But time is a tricky little shit and is moving really really fast. And I had a few free minutes (and a conference call), so I started my planning.

Theme:
Since he's, you know, a baby and doesn't really have any favorite things yet, I'm picking his favorites for him. I've decided that his Xylophone is his favorite toy and therefore rainbow colors would be his favorite party theme.

Cake:

And would I be completely crazy if I make the inside a rainbow too?

Other Food:

Rainbow Fruit!

And rainbow veggies!

What can of grown-up food should I have?

Decorations:

My mom has a Happy Birthday sign that she would always hang for our birthdays, sort of like this:

Balloons?

Pom Poms
colorful rainbow second birthday party tissue pom deocoration

Goodie Bags:

I doubt there will be many children, so it's not a huge deal.

Rainbow crayons?

Candy?

Kazoos?

Saturday, January 14 . . . 9 Month Visit

Today's doctor visit went SO WELL!
Firstly, we made the appointment for 9am instead of 8am (like last time!) and Momma got to sleep in (sort of)!

More importantly though, the doctor said he's doing great! Right on track, and even doing things he shouldn't do yet, like walking while holding on to someone's hands and "cruising". Oh, and growing teeth like a velociraptor.

9 month doctor visit

Stats:
17 lbs, 2 oz
26.5 inches
Can't remember the head circumference. But who would really know what it meant anyway?

We talked about dental visits (we can wait a while) and food (he'll eat when he's hungry, won't when he's not). I love that our pediatrician is so laid back (he'll get sick, he'll get hurt, no big deal), and didn't question that I was still breastfeeding at 9 months -- just wanted to make sure I wasn't giving any cow's milk yet.

Wednesday January 11, 2011 . . . teething, cont.

And we have another.

Another tooth! No wonder he was grumpy!

No wonder he's been grumpy.

Tuesday January 10 . . . Things I'll forget

The past few nights have been rough. Teething + trying to get him to go back to sleep without nursing (that's hard on BOTH of us).
Last night he was up ever 20 minutes. Finally at about 1am I nursed him back to sleep, but because it was so dry, I had to get up to get a drink. I come back and baby is sprawled across my side. The dog is all up snuggling on Chris. Deciding not to tempt fate by moving the baby, I curl up at the foot of the bed and go to sleep.
In the morning, Chris wakes up in the morning to find:
    The dog in his spot
    The baby in my spot
    Me in the dog's spot

Sunday, January 8 . . . oh the teething

It shouldn't be called "teething". I think it should be called "Demonic Possession", or something else fitting his attitude as a piece of bone shoves its way through the soft tissue of his mouth.

He's been acting weird for a few weeks, chewing on everything possible and drooling a lot. His new favorite chew toy foam mat on the living room floor, especially the edge pieces.

Then New Year's Eve, he had the worst night of his life (I know it sounds like an exaggeration, but because he life has been relatively short, it's actually accurate). He was up every few minutes all night, wouldn't nurse, and wouldn't be comforted.
We finally felt the tooth coming in, and the other day it finally poked through.

3rd Tooth

Of course it's not one of the central incisors (front teeth), like most normal babies. It's probably a lateral incisor (the next ones over) or even a Canine (the pointy ones), so he's going to look so goofy!

Thursday, January 5 . . . "Mama"

Ok, we have a "mama". I'm not sure he means me. I think it means "I want more of this thing", because it sounds a lot like "more more". But I'll take it!
